“THE
END IS NEAR!”
This year, when Lent ends on April 15, so does
your chance to
repent…or laugh…or pick up a
stone to throw…
April 11, 2006. Los
Angeles, California. It’s
been said that there’s “a time for every purpose under
heaven; a time to love…a time to hate.” This year,
for the 40 days of Lent, it’s been a time for both. Online
streaming of the controversial religious parody The McPassion began
on Ash Wednesday and immediately sparked astonishing amounts of praise,
condemnation and debate. Without benefit of advertising or
any public relations machine, this no-budget four-minute satire spread
on the Internet faster than religious fervor at a tent revival. Love
it or hate it, few online have been ignoring it:
“It's a wonderful, irreverent spoof on our commercialism and
consumer culture.
I laughed out loud and Jesus laughed along
with me.” – Marilyn
“You guys are total scumbags.” – Jennifer
“All in all, I think it's so disturbing because it peels back
the veneer so quick
and masterfully.” – James K.
“That was just awful. I understand the point you are trying
to make, but it could not possibly have been done in a more tasteless,
offensive way.” – Angelee T.
“This film is a satire, similar to Jonathan Swift's famous
satirical piece, ‘A Modest Proposal.’ The goal of
satire is to reduce a ridiculous position to absurdity.
I think
this film accomplishes this goal.” – Jennifer from Canada
“I think this is downright blasphemous and the Lord states that
blasphemy against him will not be forgiven.” – Sara
“Unfortunately, though, [The McPassion] has not received
the media attention that it deserves. News of The McPassion has
found its way to countless blogs. But, with the exception of a short
interview with Swartzwelder in Christianity
Today, both secular and evangelical mainstream media have ignored
this significant piece of criticism.” – Nicole Greenfield,
The Revealer
“May you burn forever in Heck.” – M.J.
“Please do not take this down on April 15th. It may very
well be the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. As a former
altar boy, and product of Catholic schools I wince when people can’t
have a sense of humor about things. Please, please do not take
it down.” – Kevin F.
But, the makers of The McPassion (Benjamin
Hershleder and Rik Swartzwelder) are indeed committed to ending online
streaming on April 15. If you’d like to watch and decide
for yourself, better drive-thru while you still can at www.TheMcPassion.com
